Rock Star Bangs

Feist
Leslie Fiest

Feist's bangs are clean and separate from her hair. They are not layered or blended into the sides. When she pulls her hair up nothing is falling. The ends are heavy and blunt. She has a very clean, finished look while remaining a rock star. I think I had hair like this in 4th grade:)

Scars on 45
Aimee Driver

I had to post their Grey's Anatomy video because I still watch this show...I'm ready for it to be over so I can move on with my life...

I love Aimee's bangs for the opposite reason I love Feist's..She wears them wispy and layered into the sides completely framing her face. Her style is kind of a 70's shag, layered out and hipster. It works well with her stick straight fine hair. Notice these stars use their natural texture as much as possible. When they are sweating on stage your hair will go right back to how nature intended. Hairspray, product, and fake hair are always help create a little magic:)

Florence + The Machine
Florence Welch

I like the headband across her bangs in her Drumming Song video...

Florence wears her bangs full and blunt, straight across or with a slight side swoop.

Laura Gibson

I love how Laura's bangs are round like the moon as beams of light shine on her and voice that seems to be as haunting as the rain and gloom this Pacific North West singer knows so well.

I like this alternate style choice of side sweeping when they get a little long. Just pop a bobby pin into the style, and it's grade school turned rock and roll just like Feist...

Here you go..the ultimate 80's man bangs!!
We love you David Bowie

Jackie Kennedy

From as early as I can remember I sat in my grandmother's house in New Jersey looking at dolls, plates, photos, and books of Gone With the Wind, My Fair Lady, Fred Astaire, Emily Post Etiquette, Frank Sinatra, The Regan's and The Kennedy's. My Italian grandmother had an idea of who she liked and who she did not approve of, and no one can argue that Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was a woman whose style changed the history of fashion.

If I had Barbies of these stars at the time, I would have played with Jackie as kind of my political version of Audrey Hepburn...Or, if they were on the MTV Celebrity Death Match, would they both come out in big sunglasses, and what would their weapons be? I wonder if their lives crossed.. Jacqueline Kennedy May 4, 1929-Jan. 1993, and Audrey Hepburn July 1929-May 1994..hhhmmm...I wish they could have hung out as close friends...

Here are some fun facts about the 35th First Lady

Did you know?

1. Jackie Kennedy redecorated every room in the White House, and her video tour won her an Emmy for public service.

2. Oleg Cassini designed her wardrobe in the colors of Renaissance paintings.

3.
Her questions on style are still relevant today..."All this talk over what I wear and how I fix my hair has amused and puzzled me. What does my hairdo have to do with my husband's ability to be President?"

The White House

So, in the salon you've heard me talk a lot about personal space and style. A person's home reveals a lot about them. It can be a reflection of how they see and experience the world.

What books are around, art, photos, plants, furniture, cozy spaces, music, cooking supplies, dishes...What inspires them? Where do they go to recharge and become whole again?

I love magazine spreads that show famous people in their homes. The way people look in their own space is often softer, more thoughtful, and relaxed compared to a studio photo shoot.

The Kennedy's valued art and history. Their goal was to restore the White House in a classic style that incorporated details from 1802, the year the White House was build. They raised money and accepted donations of furniture and art from the time period. Jackie believed everything in the White House should be there for a reason, to fit the style of the house.

This, everything has it's place, philosophy is something I'm becoming more aware of. I was at my massage therapists house last night , and the room was gray with neutral, soothing tones. There were big soft couches and tall gray cabinets with plants in the corners..a fireplace creating a warm atmosphere for friends to gather..But, a hot pink chandelier...no matter how cool..would change the entire feel of the room. I am trying to learn this personal style in my own space. It's fun to explore what makes me happy in my home.

One of my favorite blogs for style in photography, clothing, and home decor is Sarah Van Raden's blog a wee blog of things i love
Sarah is also a wardrobe stylist. She can be a great resource to help develop your own personal style.

Wardrobe

Along with the idea of everything having it's place, Jackie Kennedy stayed consistent in her wardrobe. She loved labels like Chanel, Valentino, and, Christian Dior. But, early in the campaign people were upset that she wasn't "shopping local", so she quickly adopted Oleg Cassini as her primary designer. During JFK's presidency color tv was just becoming popular, to make sure Jackie stood out elegantly in a sea of brown, black, white, and drab colors Cassini dressed her in the colors of Renaissance paintings. I think this is a lovely idea.

She stands out beautifully against her various backgrounds.

Do you think the signature white gloves are in place of hand sanitizer:)

Over the past year I've been an educator for Pureology, our colors are gray, white, and purple. It's made it easier to shop when I have a focus on this color palette. Stylists traditionally wear black, or black and white which is always fashionable but, not quite as approachable. I've really enjoyed being aware of how my personal style is changing and growing. And, I look forward to choosing 3 colors or maybe Renaissance tones to build my wardrobe.

What would a blog post be from me if I didn't include weddings:)

She has wedding dresses named for her. We play with details such as her signature tiny white gloves, full hair, or big, escape sunglasses...Her wedding dress of 50 yards of taffeta reflects her youth and the style at the time. Now with women marrying later in life I find the dresses moving away from the big princess look to a more womanly goddess dresses. We want to be someone's muse, an equal, and keep our own identity... not so much the Cinderella fairytale anymore. Our time is about creating your own story.

thoughts.

"All this talk over what I wear and how I fix my hair has amused and puzzled me. What does my hairdo have to do with my husband's ability to be President?"

I was talking to a friend about this very topic recently. How we are all judged based on our appearance. I wish this wasn't the case, but it is true. We all brand ourselves either casually not caring, overly made up, hipster, professional...whatever it is...You are speaking to the world through your style choices. We notice what others choose to wear, and it is difficult that a person's partner is often under the microscope as well whether they realized this or not going into the relationship. This actually can put a strain on things when one person doesn't think it matters what other people think when it plays a role in society. We all noticed what Jackie Kennedy wore. We talk about the great choices of Michelle Obama in her clean lines and rich, vibrant colors. We talk about Hillary Clinton's not so great fashion sense and when she refused to appear in Vogue because she doesn't believe fashion plays a role in politics. We talk about Kate Middleton and Princess Diana with their royal elegance. And, somehow we make judgements on the whole family, how they act and behave, and how they do their jobs. We feel like we know something about them...Do we?

Clothes, hair, style should not be an important way we think about others, but it is an interesting debate...Why do we do this...and Does it matter?

Portland Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2012

A brief rundown of Portland Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2012

1. Why is Pureology the perfect sponsor for PFW hair?

Pureology has always had a commitment to the environment since it first began in 2001 in Irvine, CA. Just a few points that make us different.

* 100% Vegan Formulas using natural and certified organic botanicals

* Concentrated formulas with no added water to reduce packaging waste and give a stronger product where using less is usually best

* All Pureology products have a 1 or 2 recycling symbol which means the plastic is easiest to recycle grades ranging 1-7 normally

* We are proud to use up to 50% Post Consumer Recycled materials in all packaging...This is huge for the haircare industry!

* We are partnered with Global Green USA where we have a focus on water conservation

These are just a few of the ways Pureology practices sustainable living. Portland Fashion Week is known as the first and only eco-sustainable production of a fashion week in the world. Pureology is excited to sponsor a show with these values.

2. What does Pureology bring to PFW?

Pureology Hairdressers worked together to create beautiful, wearable hair with the intention of creating a total look for each designer. This is the second year that Pureology has sponsored PFW, and it is the second year that we have tried to change every model between designers in a matter of seconds or minutes backstage. As the lead stylist, I really wanted to have consistency on the runway. Pureology hair is known for being healthy, radiant hair color, soft, touchable, full, and luxurious. I wanted the models to have this hair.

3. Why do I love PFW?

This is my 5th year backstage and my 2nd as lead stylist. It was so fun to walk into the model fitting during the weeks before PFW and see everyone again. It has become one big, happy, crazy family...kind of like going back to summer camp year after year. We are all excited to see each other and create a show that is better and better every year as we learn through experience. I've loved watching this production become what it is today, and I'm excited to see what's next!!

4. Who are my top 5 designers to check out?

1. Ms. Wood

2. Amai Unmei

3. Seth Aaron

4. Jay Sario

5. Grishley

5. My favorite PFW Hair

1. Seth Aaron

Black Wigs and Masks forced your eye on the clothes. Backstage was chaos as we shouted girls names to get them in the lineup unsure of who anyone was.

2. Michael Costello

Micahel had sultry faux bobs with jeweled headbands to show the necklines of the clothes while keeping the hair loose and moveable.

3. Anna Cohen

Anna Cohen kept things seemingly simple...The hair had bits of yarn woven into it or felted flowers. My favorite was Mandi Kremer's hair from the back which was full and in kind of a loose braid...But, I couldn't find a picture..You had to be there to see it...

4. Avni

Avni made silk flowers for each model. I wish I had a close up of the intricate details. Completely beautiful.

5. Ethos Paris
All the hair was kept consistent in either a Spanish feeling updo or side swept style pinned with a signature red flower.

6. Who Did the Hair ?

Pureology selected some of their top salons to work the show each night. It's not easy...We get there at 3pm and do hair until the shows over maybe leaving around 10-11pm..These stylists were fast, they new how to use the products, and the stayed calm under pressure!!

Thanks again!!

Wednesday The Phix and Edward Wadsworth
Thursday Anastasia
Friday Rinnovo
Saturday Tres Bon

7. Who was I surprised to see backstage?

The Portland Timbers walking for EarthTec...They were back there having beers and chilling with the models..There are some new romances and I guess some that have been going on for a while..hush hush;)

Timbers Video

8. My top 3 improvements for future hair?

1. More models so that models do not have to get their hair changed between looks..I would love to set the hair into big soft curls, or a tight smooth slick ponytail and keep it as only that for the night. Instead of Ponytail, to bun, to down waves, to beachy waves, to braids, bun, twist, pull, pin...yikes...BUT, WE HAVE FUN! And, I'm just glad PFW letting us change looks for each designer!!!

2. Monitors backstage of the show as it's happening so I can see if there are bangs that are parting in the middle after being set in a strong middle ponytail, or a dent from a rubberband that could be smoothed.

3. Synthetic or real hair to add to models hair for length, fullness, style. It was fun working with Seth Aaron's wigs..He had short black bobs for every model and masks..He was going for a Andy Warhol London in the 60's feel. It totally worked!!

9. What's the hardest part about working on hair backstage?

Portland Fashion Week has been such a great experience for me. When I first started it was hard because of the level of perfection it requires. Sometimes I would do a style, and I would look over and someone else was redoing it. I remember the lead stylist telling me to do a messy braid. So, I made it loose and messy. Then the designer must have asked for a clean braid. And, I looked over and another stylist was redoing my braid which I knew I could do if I was asked to do a neat braid. It hurts, and you can't help but feel bad. Now I still try to ask for honest opinions and a "group eye" to look over my work and the work of my team. It's important to be open and enjoy the talent of others. Sometimes it's hard to see your own mistakes, but we have to remember that it doesn't matter who does the hair as long as it looks amazing on the runway.

10. What do I love about fashion shows compared to still photography?

Watching the clothes and hair move on the runway can be breathtaking. Imagine watching the ocean move compared to seeing it in a picture. The the dress I posted for Ms. Wood made the model want to stay in constant motion. Christina was dancing backstage and the dress danced with her like a modern flapper. Watching Sierra's long hair or the curls of other models bounce on the runway brings life to fashion. The dresses by Seth Aaron, Jay Sario, and Michael Costello made the models look like queens as the excess fabric swept over the runway. Hair, makeup, models, and clothes come together for 4 nights to create the beauty of Portland Fashion Week. See you guys next year:)

Thank you everyone for making PFW possible!!!

Searching for art...

It's time to let go of my favorite season and move into fall...I'm feeling the itch to change my space to embrace this new time.I would love to have a new artist in the salon soon...If you or anyone you know would like to show their work in Salon Capelli please contact me kirapnski@gmail.com

We are about a week into fall, and I'm feeling the change creeping upon us with the weather getting cool and rainy..perfect for reading, tea, and cozying up for my regular girls craft night which seems to happen more often in the colder months. I'm excited for this new season!!

Portland Fashion Week Oct. 5-9 marks the start of fall for me. This is the 5th year I've participated and my second year as the Pureology hair lead for the week.

You can receive a 10% discount with code PUREOLOGY05

PFW is like Christmas for me. It's busy, exhausting, and full of surprises. I get to catch up with my PFW friends and find out what's changed in the past year. I love seeing all my girls!! It's like a family reunion. Then we get a first look at the most current styles and get to watch them move on the runway. Watching clothes move is a completely different experience than seeing a still photo. At the model fitting, I watched Tiffany walk in a black, perfectly draped Anna Cohen dress, and the look completely changed as she glided through the room at the Benson. There are poems about women walking down stairs or when someone enters a room...This movement and flow is what the runway brings to fashion. Welcome fall and welcome Portland fashion.

And, finally fall to me is getting ready for the holidays Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Spending time with friends and family surrounded by warm food and drinks, talking curled up with pillows, and plenty of hugs.

In art I'd love to see any of these elements in the salon friends, family, fashion, holidays, and the warm colors especially orange, yellow, and red. It's time for fall...Salon Capelli is currently showing Gretchen Jang Her work has added such life to our walls!! Thank you Gretchen the stylists and our clients have loved your show!! If you haven't seen her work yet stop by
